Muay Thai Festival 2025: Phuket Celebrates the Art of Fighting

Phuket is gearing up for the “Muay Thai Phuket Festival 2025”, taking place this coming weekend. With this event, the island aims to strengthen its reputation as a true Muay Thai mecca while showcasing the power and charm of Thai culture and sport on the world stage.

Here’s the most important info first

The Muay Thai Phuket Festival 2025 will take place from August 15 to 17 2025, at the Robinson Lifestyle Center in Chalong (Soi Ta-iad).

Already at the press conference on Sunday, August 10, over 300 young Muay Thai fans gathered for a traditional Wai Khru ceremony, led by Nueng Lan Lek. This solemn opening set the perfect tone for the upcoming three days of the festival – a special celebration of respect, tradition, and community.

Who is leading the ceremony?

Nueng Lan Lek is a well-known Muay Thai trainer and a respected figure in Thailand’s Muay Thai scene. He often takes part in major events and ceremonies, especially those involving traditional rituals like the Wai Khru ceremony.

His name represents experience and tradition in Muay Thai, and he is often regarded as a mentor for young fighters and fans of the sport.

The festival itself will take place from Friday to Sunday, August 15–17, at Robinson Chalong. The event is backed by a strong partnership between the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), its subcommittee for sports promotion, and Phuket Province – a joint effort that continues to grow Muay Thai.

The Deputy Governor of the SAT for professional sports and boxing stated that this festival is not just about the sport – it’s also about strengthening Muay Thai as a creative economic driver.

Phuket aims to remain visible as Thailand’s Muay Thai hub, creating jobs, supporting local communities, and boosting tourism.

The city hosts several dozen Muay Thai training venues – likely around 25 to 30 active gyms. Phuket is already a magnet for enthusiasts of the sport. In 2024, more than 80,000 tourists came to the island specifically to train and immerse themselves in the culture.

To ensure that this growth remains safe and sustainable, infrastructure and security are key priorities. The organizers plan to hold the festival annually to further establish Phuket as a world-class Muay Thai destination while providing new income opportunities for the local community and businesses.

Top Fights with World-Class Athletes

Look forward to a diverse program featuring 15 thrilling professional fights, workshops for international visitors, and booths from local boxing camps. Featured fighters include Kong Thoranee Sor Sommai and Superlek Kiatmuu9 – and of course, three days packed with action, culture, and fun.

Superlek Kiatmuu9 is one of Thailand’s most famous and successful Muay Thai fighters. He is considered an exceptional athlete with remarkable technique and fighting spirit, having won numerous national and international titles. Superlek is known for his fast, precise fighting style and impressive striking power. He is often ranked among the top fighters in the Muay Thai scene and is hugely popular with fans worldwide.

He comes from Buriram Province in northeastern Thailand. He began his Muay Thai career there at a young age before gaining national and international fame.

A few years ago, I took a six-month Muay Thai course in Bangkok, so I know exactly what the training feels like – even though I was, of course, a beginner. Back then, I was fitter than I had ever been in my life. Unfortunately, Covid hit, and the training had to end abruptly. I haven’t resumed it since, but my fascination with this unique sport has remained to this day.

Historical Background of Muay Thai

Muay Thai, also known as “The Art of Eight Limbs,” has a long history dating back several hundred years. Originally, the martial art emerged in Thailand (formerly Siam) as a military combat technique, used by soldiers for self-defense and in warfare.

Over time, Muay Thai evolved from purely combat techniques into a sport and cultural tradition. Rituals such as the Wai Khru ceremony – a way of showing respect to teachers and ancestors – played an important role. By the 20th century, Muay Thai had become increasingly popular, with organized competitions, formal rules, and dedicated arenas known as stadiums.

Many people immediately think of tough fights and brutal strikes when they hear Muay Thai. Of course, that’s part of it, but there’s much more to the sport. Muay Thai is an ancient tradition where respect and discipline are paramount. Fighters not only learn how to strike correctly but also the importance of fairness, patience, and mutual respect.

A common misconception is that Muay Thai is only for men or professional athletes. Not at all!

Whether young or old, female or male, beginner or advanced – anyone can give Muay Thai a try. It not only keeps you fit but also makes you feel good and boosts your self-confidence.

Today, Muay Thai is Thailand’s national sport and an important part of Thai culture. It is practiced not only as a martial art but also as a symbol of tradition, discipline, and pride – both across the country and around the world.
